"No Future" Students

Since the workers have been neutered, it is apparently up to students to foment social change. Unfortunately, the history of these "uprisings" does not bode well for anything all that profound to result. Not that we can tell much by the coverage. I just learned about the students in Serbia who are threatening the standard opposition and the sclerotic regime. But how will they fight the bond market? European students from Greece to Spain to France understand they are screwed but what is marching and waving signs supposed to do? Then there is the sclerotic "black bloc" stuck in their hoodie fantasy of fifty years ago, burning trash bins and breaking windows. A sign of the times- meaning total lack of imagination- if there ever was one. In Italy, Albania, I'm sure there are others, young people especially though not only them, face not just an uncertain future but a predictably dystopian one. You wouldn't know it from reading the mainstream media, but you just have to look at one data point - accumulated debt- to see that capitalism doesn't work. Here in the US there is unbounded hoopla over upcoming elections, as if throwing out the bums or draining the swamp yet again will somehow produce positive change. As for the Initiative in California, saying "tax the billionaires" is a way to dodge saying the word Capital, which is the thing you should really be focused on. This is the problem with "progressive populism" in the age of oblivion. Until people realize the reason there is an "affordability crisis" is due to economic growth, we will keep oscilating back and forth between fantasies. Until they see that the bond market calls the shots and not some meathead politician we will keep watching temperatures rise and species go extinct. Here in Montana, the right-wing is using McCartyite red-scare tactics to excite the knuckleheads, another retro throwback because that's all there is. Why not argue about the gold standard? or slavery? The only thing propping up the economy is something no one understands but everyone hates. And over which they have zero control.
